Wes’s Journey

For high school, the Dunning family decided to send Wes to Gonzaga College high school, where he was able to compete in the WCAC, which is known is one of the best basketball conferences in the country. During his the spring of his 10th grade year, as a skinny sophomore, Gonzaga brought in a strength & conditioning coach named Blair O’Donovan who would change the quality of the athletes’ training as well as their approach to development. In 2008, Wes’s senior year, Gonzaga had their best season in school history finishing with a 34-1 record, Washington Catholic Athletic Conference(WCAC) championship, Washington D.C. City Title, #1 local ranking in the Washington Post and consensus top 5 ranking in the country!

After success at Gonzaga, Wes would go on to play at the college level. He attended Hampton University where he played at the Division 1 level from 2009-2013 enjoying a lot of success including a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament championship and birth in the NCAA March Madness “Big Dance” Tournament! Wes interned with the Strength & Conditioning staff at Hampton during his senior year which continued to spark his interest in the Sports Performance side of the game. Shortly after his playing career ended, Wes began coach and training basketball players on the court and then re-united with Blair when he joined the staff at Healthy Baller in 2015!

After experiencing firsthand how proper training elevated his own game, Wes committed to helping others achieve similar, and even better, breakthroughs. Since 2013, he’s developed a unique training methodology that seamlessly integrates on-court skills with athletic performance.

Today, Wes delivers elite level performance training for a variety of athletes with Healthy Baller located in Rockville, MD as well as high quality Basketball Skill development in the DMV area. His services reach even further as he is available online and can travel for in person training sessions, camps or clinics!

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to work and train with Coach Wes. Coming off a shoulder injury and multiple knee injuries, I needed a trainer that would just help me with just the basics of basketball. The fundamentals like, footwork, jumping/ landing properly etc. Wes was able to diagnose those problems and help me fix those issues to lessen those constant injuries. His ability to incorporate his knowledge working in sports performance and combining it with his on the court knowledge/ experience helped me get better this summer, while seeing major progression throughout that time. I was able to gain a ton of mental and physical knowledge about the game because of Wes, and would not be doing as well as I am today with basketball without him.

Working with Wes has been a game changer for my development on the court. His attention to detail and the way he breaks down skills into specific, actionable feedback helped me make a huge jump in my game. He doesn’t just tell you what to fix he explains the “why” behind it, which makes it easier to apply, and see how it translates to a real game. However, what stands out most is how he balances being demanding with also building a genuine, personal relationship, creating a safe environment where you can comfortably receive and apply feedback .

Coach Wes is very intentional with everything we do on the court! I like how he focuses on quality reps instead of quantity. In our on court sessions, Coach Wes emphasizes foot placement and angles which ultimately results in efficient footwork, helping me become more dynamic. Most of everything we do is detailed based & specific to my play style. Details are what separate the good players from the great players! Coach Wes shows how invested he is by watching game film to critique me personally and offer suggestion on how I can become more effective and efficient!

He specifically worked with basketball movements, agility and strengthening with me because that’s what I needed and I feel like I got stronger, faster, quicker when I finished. Thank you to Healthy Baller for always allowing me to workout with you guys and a great experience!
