Wes’s Journey

For high school, the Dunning family decided to send Wes to Gonzaga College high school, where he was able to compete in the WCAC, which is known is one of the best basketball conferences in the country. During his the spring of his 10th grade year, as a skinny sophomore, Gonzaga brought in a strength & conditioning coach named Blair O’Donovan who would change the quality of the athletes’ training as well as their approach to development. In 2008, Wes’s senior year, Gonzaga had their best season in school history finishing with a 34-1 record, Washington Catholic Athletic Conference(WCAC) championship, Washington D.C. City Title, #1 local ranking in the Washington Post and consensus top 5 ranking in the country!

After success at Gonzaga, Wes would go on to play at the college level. He attended Hampton University where he played at the Division 1 level from 2009-2013 enjoying a lot of success including a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament championship and birth in the NCAA March Madness “Big Dance” Tournament! Wes interned with the Strength & Conditioning staff at Hampton during his senior year which continued to spark his interest in the Sports Performance side of the game. Shortly after his playing career ended, Wes began coach and training basketball players on the court and then re-united with Blair when he joined the staff at Healthy Baller in 2015!

After experiencing firsthand how proper training elevated his own game, Wes committed to helping others achieve similar, and even better, breakthroughs. Since 2013, he’s developed a unique training methodology that seamlessly integrates on-court skills with athletic performance.

Today, Wes delivers elite level performance training for a variety of athletes with Healthy Baller located in Rockville, MD as well as high quality Basketball Skill development in the DMV area. His services reach even further as he is available online and can travel for in person training sessions, camps or clinics!

Wes has had a huge impact on my development in the performance and strength & conditioning space. His training is extremely effective because he knows how to push a group while still tailoring things to meet each individual’s needs. Wes does a great job of making sure that everything connects back to performance on the court. He has a great ability to explain not just what we’re doing, but how it translates to competing at a higher level.

Beyond the physical side, Wes also teaches lessons that go far past sports, like discipline, accountability, and how to show up consistently for yourself and your team. The standards he sets in training build habits that carry into everyday life. Working with him has made me stronger, faster, and more resilient, both as an athlete and as a person.

I’ve been working with Coach Wes for about 4-5 years. He’s helped me a lot with strength, speed, agility, injury prevention…with strength specifically, he’s really helped me put on weight and muscle while keeping my speed and agility, quickness and explosiveness. Everytime I’ve consistently been in with Coach Wes, I’ve felt a lot stronger on the field, and been able to perform at higher levels year after year. I think his work has helped me tremendously!

I’ve been working with Coach Wes since high school, and honestly it’s been a huge part of my athletic journey! Working with Wes has been amazing; I feel like he really gets me what I need. What makes him truly special is how much he cares about his athletes. It’s not just about the workout or exercises we’re doing, it’s about your growth, confidence and performing at your best!

I’m really thankful for (Coach Wes) and what he’s done for me. I was coming off a right knee surgery, and I didn’t know what the process would look like…and he really laid that out for me. He really believed in me, put a lot of time in with me. Just a great coach overall and really helped my speed, attention to detail and jumping ability. Even stuff off the court, he’s been a great mentor to me!

Coach Wes has transformed my body within one year in ways that allowed me to compete at my full potential entering my Freshman year at Howard University. During both of our on and off court training, it was focused on developing healthy lifting habits as well as gaining confidence in trusting my own body strength. He challenged me and body in ways I never knew I could reach during our training sessions. Now entering my Freshman year, I’ve been able to keep up with older guys as Coach Wes has prepared me to lift and know my body every session.
